Hello everyone- great to meet you all on monday.

I am planning to produce a small scale arts publication next year, I only really got the chance to talk to a few of you about this on monday, but was hoping to develop the idea within the group. The idea is to get a small magazine, type publication printed along with a website. for me one of the most important elements of the mentoring scheme is the chance for artists to share experiences, ideas and time together. The publication that I am imagining would expand on this, by offering a space in which to develop ideas or new works, as individuals, or groups, and put them out to an audience. Although I do have some intentions for it, the exact form and content of the publication will evolve over the course of the year. I would like each edition of the publication to be based around a central or unifying idea, theme or proposition. This may be posed in the form of a question or statement or an image, event or concept. Once the theme has been established people would be invited to create/submit work in response to it. A core theme or idea for the publication would hopefully allow for any number of disparate approaches, mediums, styles and voices to sit well together within one publication and make for interesting reading and participation. I would like the publication to be a mixture of images -(photography, documentation of work/events, illustration etc...) and also text-(critical writing, poetry, personal statements, prose and opinion etc..)

The publication would be aimed at artists and people who have an interest in the arts; people who may benefit from having access to other artists ideas and work, and hopefully people who may participate in further editions. The main outlets for the printed publication would be art spaces, such as galleries, studios, and bookshops. I have contacted a number of these spaces across the country, to see if they would be interested in becoming outlets for a publication of this sort and the feedback has been positive. I have put in for a for a small grant from the arts council to get the first edition printed, which would be given out free. If the project is successful and there is enough interest, future editions may be sold in order to fund themselves.

It would be really interested to see if any of you would be up for getting involved in or submitting work etc to a project like this. I think that one of the most important things for this project is getting the core subject or provocation to be as interesting and relevant as possible. It will be interesting to see how many of us have particular themes, subjects or underlying motivations that are similar and wether identifying those threads would help in developing the central idea of the first edition...

Hi Jacob, it sounds like a great idea, I'd be very interested in participating. I've sort of been thinking about something similar for a while, but not done anything about it.

The way I work means that I end up with lots of disperate things, most of which don't go anywhere, but just float around my studio. I think it would be good to have a context like this to get some of these things out there, and a theme to bring them together.

It's probably too early to ask, but how are you planning to print it?

This guy who I went to college with published a magazine for a while, if you're interested, you can look at his website: www.adamburton.com (the website design is quite labarynthine, the link for the magazine is a gif of an explosion, which is above an image of a yellow bird.)
