'Halo' - construction & design

Hello blog,

these are (very basic) designs that I am having made in collaboration with a neon specialist called Laszlo. The idea is the neon Halo will be strapped to my body and used in performances/videos/ and or photographs. It could also stand alone as a sculpture, or an archive piece intervening in a museum setting.

This is in keeping with my ideas of 'body-morphing' using religious symbolism and mythology as a blueprint. Let me know what you think of the design for the prototype, it will be built by the end of Feb, and feel free to drop suggestions, or if you think it could be made/designed differently etc...

this reminds me very much of the wedding processions i have seen in india in which the people walking carry fluorescent tubes (they wheel a small generator with them)
that struck me as utilising the very modern to celebrate the ancient past (india is of course famous for this) also it looks weird to say the least.
what you are doing with the tubing makes me think in the same way. it is great. what colour is the light?

Thanks for the comments zaza,

the colour of the light is as yet undecided, i think this will be the one of the last decisions,

i'n my various photographs/performances i will be sometimes stained different colours, but only slightly, you will still see my natural skin colour, the most likely and obvious colour will be blue, which makes me think an orange neon strip (the only light source in the piece) would work very well, white and red have too many connotations attached to them, blue/green will clash...but we'll see...

hi Minda, why worry about connotations to colour? Orange in parts of ireland has religious undertones and a blue painted body was part of the celtic warriors heritage.

What is the message/concept of the neon halo? What connotations could be made to something glowing strapped to your back?

Sorry minda, i hate myself for the latter comment. I was in deep thoughts about the clash of religions hence mentioning colours and thier meaning within religion. sometimes I focus my research far to heavy on what religion can be blamed for within our societies.

after posting the comment I then google searched you to find that you talk about spirituallity. I missed your presentation at the first meeting. had i an insight into the work before I may have thought differently about my approach.

I guess something in your drawings about the way it is harnessed and your mention of dark perpex makes me feel uneasy. Is this what you intend from the idea?

Hi Harminder,
I just see the picture and wonder if you might consider putting yourself into a different pose/position? I am not sure if I got the gist of your work on your presentation... Am I right that your work is about mixing multiple religions and therefore turning it into a fake religion or actually negating the notion of religion.
My earlier work was dealing with melting eastern and western culture and I was posing in a German dress (made of an Indian Sari) in a Ganesha pose, which is symbolising the swastika - which has a horrible modern history, as we all know.
Anyway, I wondered if that might trigger some ideas. If it is a still photograph might it be of interest to look at the depiction of saints in churches, or Greek and Roman gods? Might that be a possibility to move slightly away from the lotus position that you are preferrably taking and give it an enhanced ambiguous touch? just a thought.
