Long time gone...

Dear All

My apologies for having been absent from the blog for such a long period of time. I have been away on various courses for work, so I have not had access to the internet for a while. It’s good to read it now though and see that discussions and images and posts are already here…

I really enjoyed our day at the South London Gallery- it seemed to go so quickly though, but I look forward to catching up with people in the New Year!! Gorgeous food also- another day of over indulging. And the worst hangover of my life on Tuesday morning- sorry I dashed off so quickly Rachel…really didn’t want you to have to wake up to my stale body spralled across your living room floor. My trek back home left me promising myself never to drink again…blurry vision, sweating profusely and on several occasions thinking I would actually have to get off the bus to be sick in the street- it was worth it though for seeing people and having some really good conversations the night before!

I was on a course this week for work and I was sat in these sessions about confidence and assertiveness. I had really scoffed when it was suggested I go, because I thought it would all be common sense stuff and lots of those awkward ‘get to know each other type team games’, but I was really surprised. I guess before this year I have never really thought about whether I was confident or not, but looking back over the past year I really feel like it has given me confidence- people on the mentoring have given me confidence. And equally I think I am more able to be assertive, and not be so passive…certainly at Wysing, or from Wysing, I had this thing about not having anything to say, but actually I do have things to say, even if I am not quite sure what those things are…..Shabs, you said something as we were walking to the pub about me standing a foot taller and being more confident- thank you, it meant a lot.

Rachel, I started reading the leaflet you gave out, from the film festival, and I am gutted I couldn’t make it that weekend…you mentioned touring- please think of Cambridge if you do- I really would love to see some of these films. Although I might check out cinenova- they were mentioned at a talk I went to at the Tate, but I wasn’t entirely sure of what exactly it was.

Franko- congratulations on your book- I love the black cover and that red ribbon that sits in between the pages….I’d love to look at it with a bit more time though, so I can read the text also. Oh, by the way, I will bring your two DVDs back when I am next in London- I haven’t watched them yet, but will get some time over Christmas.

Will write again soon.

With love, Katherine.

embracing anger

Hi,
It's good to see everyone getting the hang of the blogg, I've been out of it for a couple of weeks juggling life and death... dying grandfather on the one hand and brand new neice (4 days old!) on the other, life weirdly comes into view. So sorry about absence.... sometimes you need to disapear for a while.

Lots is going on for me at the moment workwise, there is momentum which is really exciting.
It all started when i decided to embrace anger "To be female and conscious anywhere in the world is to live in a constant state of rage..." that was a line in one of the films we showed for the film festival. Since I heard it I realised that anger was something i needed to address, something that I share with alot of people who are all trying not to feel angry because we are told it's bad for us and for society. i disagree. I think anger can mobilise us... i'm not talking mobs with sticks (though I'm not ruling this out!) I'm talking action. Its time to act.
Since embracing anger I feel it so physically, I am not joking, the things which used to give me a knot in my stomach now give me a phsyical pain in my kidneys! its not pleasent but it makes me feel alive, and i love feeling alive!

So I'm acting, I've signed up to a training course for facilitating direct action training - this starts in Jan (though I've already done some basics). Some women and I have decided to ressurect the feminists against pornography movement (which died in the 80's) We are organising a mass training day in Febuary to mobilise women in direct action, and also - this is really random but exciting... i'm going to do a collaborative project for the Hayward Gallery next year about peace, this was also born from anger as the artist leading the work emailed a call out for artists who are interested in peace - she's coming at it from a very spiritual, medative perspective where as I am interested in the physicality of peace-working collaboratively in a situation of disagreement/conflict, the physicality of peace (which I can't speak about without talking about war)

So all pretty exciting for me anyway.
Super tired.....
see you all soon,
Rachel x

Consumer Whore

the text on the image may be difficult to read so I deliver it in black and white. I hope this all works... Jon

What is the purpose of our lives?
When we struggle to survive.
When can we sleep peacefully in our beds?
Without a feeling of anger or seeing red.
Greed and corruption is ruining this planet,
the want for more is driving me manic.
I sit and eat my humble pie as humanities greed
makes me rumble inside.

Vodaphone called me the other day asking me
whether I wanted a free upgrade.
I said no it is not neccessary,
i'm happy with what I am using.
I do not need the next new toy,
the slim fit one that fits in your pocket.
Just because it's lighter to carry around...

HELL have you seen China's ruined ground!

For the want and greed of the human being,
when shall the consumer society give in.

My laptop is old and heavy to carry around,
i'll have to trawl through the internet to Toshiba land;
so as I can ask there customer service department where
can I take my machine to get the damn thing repaired.
Or do I just take off the plastic shell and have a look
inside the PC hell, to clean the fan and give it a service;
replace the graphics card and a few of the circuits.
As most of it is working fine, a few minor problems
whilst I listen to the damn thing whine!

It really annoys me when manufacturers build in
obsolescence.

I'm tiring of our wanton greed, what makes me
sad is it is what is expected of me,

The peer group pressure to want more...

I'M FED UP OF BEING A CONSUMER WHORE!

de-mentored

de-mentored Hey all,
yes, I really enjoyed Monday and am very much looking forward to a challenging year and creative times with all of you. For now I am very curious about my first one-2-one and can't wait to bite into some serious "nut cracking" and a creativity shake up. Want to say not only a big thank you to lovely Franko, Rachel and the food suppliers but also to Manick and especially to Frances who has been tremendously supportive. xxxxx
Wanted to say also that I love your idea, Jacob, and I am definitely in for it. It sounds really exciting. Do you know www.lulu.com? Might be worth having a look at that one. It's a publishing website.
That's it for now. Biggi xx

Hello everyone- great to meet you all on monday.

I am planning to produce a small scale arts publication next year, I only really got the chance to talk to a few of you about this on monday, but was hoping to develop the idea within the group. The idea is to get a small magazine, type publication printed along with a website. for me one of the most important elements of the mentoring scheme is the chance for artists to share experiences, ideas and time together. The publication that I am imagining would expand on this, by offering a space in which to develop ideas or new works, as individuals, or groups, and put them out to an audience. Although I do have some intentions for it, the exact form and content of the publication will evolve over the course of the year. I would like each edition of the publication to be based around a central or unifying idea, theme or proposition. This may be posed in the form of a question or statement or an image, event or concept. Once the theme has been established people would be invited to create/submit work in response to it. A core theme or idea for the publication would hopefully allow for any number of disparate approaches, mediums, styles and voices to sit well together within one publication and make for interesting reading and participation. I would like the publication to be a mixture of images -(photography, documentation of work/events, illustration etc...) and also text-(critical writing, poetry, personal statements, prose and opinion etc..)

The publication would be aimed at artists and people who have an interest in the arts; people who may benefit from having access to other artists ideas and work, and hopefully people who may participate in further editions. The main outlets for the printed publication would be art spaces, such as galleries, studios, and bookshops. I have contacted a number of these spaces across the country, to see if they would be interested in becoming outlets for a publication of this sort and the feedback has been positive. I have put in for a for a small grant from the arts council to get the first edition printed, which would be given out free. If the project is successful and there is enough interest, future editions may be sold in order to fund themselves.

It would be really interested to see if any of you would be up for getting involved in or submitting work etc to a project like this. I think that one of the most important things for this project is getting the core subject or provocation to be as interesting and relevant as possible. It will be interesting to see how many of us have particular themes, subjects or underlying motivations that are similar and wether identifying those threads would help in developing the central idea of the first edition...

Opportunities

Commissioning opportunity for live and performance artists.
Fierce! Festival's Youth Panel is looking to commission an artist or artist group to make a new performance work for the 10th festival in May/June 2007.
A total fee of £2000 is available inclusive of travel, accommodation and production costs.
Fierce! Festival is an annual event, commissioning and presenting the area of artistic practice referred to as 'live art'. However, we also regularly present theatre, contemporary dance, new music, contemporary visual arts and digital arts projects. We have a commitment to and a tradition of exposing audiences to international work and site specific work. Fierce! delivers year-round education work in formal and informal settings.
The Youth Panel is a group of twenty young people from four secondary schools in Birmingham. Over the past 18 months the Youth Panel has visited many contemporary arts organisations across Birmingham and experienced first-hand what each has to offer. By attending performances, talks, exhibitions, restaurants (within the
organisations) the young people have gained the knowledge in order to inform their peers, families and teachers about what is happening in the City, in turn developing new audiences for the arts.
As part of their development the Youth Panel will this year be commissioning an artist/artist group to make a new piece of performance-based work for Fierce!
Festival. They will be involved in the selection of the artist/artist group through shortlist and interview, marketing and producing the work, along with documenting and evaluating the event.
Please note that as this work will be commissioned by young people is necessary that the content be suitable for secondary school-aged pupils.
The programme is funded by Creative Partnerships and managed by Fierce! Festival.
To apply please send a proposal, a budget outline, a recent CV and documentation of your work by Monday 8 January 2007 to:
