Birmingham and back plus other stuff

hello there,

A quick thank you to zaza and harminder for Sunday. It was good to get out of Stevenage and see whatothers are doing and where they do it. Minda, sorry that we didn't get to spend much time at yours in the end but had to get back earlyish as I had a meeting here in stevenage on Monday morning which I had not finished preparing for.

Lisa, Tom and Shabz, it was good to catch up, sorry it was so short. Hope to catch up properly when we're in London.

It was a fun trip out nevertheless.

we'll have to try to do it again, although I suggest a week day or saturday only, my reason for this is due to public transportation on the sunday... it's a no go area.

I'll catch up with you all when i'm back from south africa.

Franko I'm sure there will be a few questions that i'll think about over the next few days regarding the week in london so i'll be in touch soon

Hugs to all
Hi all old and new,
Many many apologies for not making it on Sunday. I really wanted to be there, however my sensible side kicked in , I'm having to concentrate on a new job. It's a lot of responsibility, so I'm trying not to fuck it up.
I did , however spend most of the day wishing that I had come. Thankyou so much for the invite anyway.
Lucille, hope your show went well on Saturday xxx
Katherine and Lucille , it was comforting and interesting to read what you wrote about the regularity of a paid job. it is so true. I seem to be more productive the busier I am . As I battle sometimes with depression and fatigue, I feel the need to stay wound up and busy. As soon as I start to slow down, I either get flu or get low and lethargic. The worry of where the next job will come from and money worries all contribute to a big cloud above me that's hard to shift. This all restricts any artistic productivity. I have been reading a lot of David Lynch articles recently as he has a big show on in Paris. I love his films and Twin Peaks. It was funny becasue I read these comments after seeing what Katherine wrote.....
He dismisses the romatic suffereing notion of the artist... " ... the more the artist is suffering, the less the artist can do. Negativity squeezes the conduit of the flow of creativity"
He has also perfectly described the reason for the way in which I see things or delete certain parts of information in my work. He speaks about deforminty and the ever compulsion to pay attention to it. 'There's an attraction and a repulsion simultaneously"
"It's a human thing. It's a different angle on the human condition . A distortion or a disease or an abnormality always makes something start happening in the brain....they start making you dream."
That's how I feel, I really want people to dream. By using image association and only the remains and clues to something. I hope to make the viewer dream the rest.

I have just started my first Art Directing job which is pretty full on. It's great being the boss and being in control. It sounds silly but it also helps to control my own life too. Constantly organising all day has meant that my personal life has been that much more organised too. I also have an assistant and have discovered the art of deligation, it's great! I've decided to try to somehow use these skills in prop finding and organising to organise a show. I feel quite disappointed in myself for not working in the art world, so this is a way of justifying and using what I do.
I have also applied for an MA at the RCA . As I haven't heard anything, I assume it's bad news again. In order to let this not get on top of me, get back on the horse and all that, I think I need to produce something and turn it into a positive.

Hope I haven't waffled too much. I'm going to a P.V. tomorrow at The One in the Other on Vyner street if anyone fancies it,

much love,
Ninaxxxxxx

jacob , need to talk to you ..

00:47 Sunday 25 February 2007

Dear All

My apologies for not being in Birmingham today. I was still deciding late on Saturday night whether to be there or not, but decided not to. It was not that I didn’t want to be there, I did. However, I also want a bit of time to get on with some work…time to process some thoughts and actually give some time to work out what I think, if that makes sense. I feel like the nature of my job prevents me from having much time in the week to give any time to sit down and write about what I am thinking, which I knw is a helpful process in my working out where I am up to.

I haven’t been doing very much writing recently, for myself, just making notes, working through ideas, but also on the blog…feeling tired, a bit flat etc, working lots, but I have had a good weekend and it feels good to have been able to clarify things in my own head.

Lucille I completely understand what you mean about having regular paid employment. At the moment I think I need the structure of my job – to be able to get up in the morning at a an hour when I feel like I haven’t lost half my morning, so that I am aware of how precious my own time is….but it’s more than that I think. I get a certain sense of value or self worth out of my job…or feeling like I am relied upon, even if this is only my perception of it….it feeds my need to be busy or productive all the time, and I do not know where this need comes from or why I have set this meaning within my life, because often it doesn’t lead to productivity, at least in my own time. I also think that what you have said about your own approach to work makes a hell of a lot of sense, and I agree with you. Part of me knows that I would be happy to be cutting and sticking images together and making sense of them if only I could do this, say, every other day for twenty minutes or half an hour….. but reminding myself of this regularly, reminding myself that my practice is not about churning out work every month, or constantly having a project or a set piece on the go is just not how my practice operates….

I have been writing my Arts Council report over the past couple of weeks, which has been incredibly valuable for me, just to look back at the past year and think about what has been important and helpful and positive about the mentoring scheme. One thing, probably more important than anything else was being able to grasp an idea of what my practice is, which I didn’t do on my own – people have said things that kind of came as a bit of a revelation to me, despite it maybe being prominent in how I approach my own work.

I too make work I am most excited by when I take the pressure off…I guess it is reminding myself of this and trying to actually take the pressure off that is important. I felt like that about Wysing….I took the pressure off, I was there to be there, not produce something, and actually what I did leave with was, amongst other things, a piece of work that I feel very strongly about.

I think I, or I like to think I do make one or two pieces a year that I do feel strongly about, that I feel excited by and question me and surprise me, and instead of desperately trying to squeeze more out of myself it is valuing that nurturing in between those pieces of work that I need to recognise and give time to. The berating and punishing oneself isn’t so much conscious, but, well I don’t know, I guess we all do it. Anyway, thank you for what you wrote… I thin sometimes we can know something, or be vaguely aware of something, but it is only when someone else eloquently approaches us with their words that we take it in, we see it for ourselves clearly and can then process it. So, thank you.

I went to see Donna at Wysing on Friday, to chat about applying for a studio. I have never really had a studio, only as a student when I was on my BA course, and after about two years, I decided not to use it…..although I guess it wasn’t a studio, it was a shared space, with more often than not at least three or four other people all trying to make their work. Ever since then I have never given serious thought to having a studio. In fact I have readily dismissed the idea, thinking that I am not a studio based artist, nor do I make work in a studio. When I saw the advert in artist’s newsletter I guess I dismissed that too to a certain extent. However, over the past couple of weeks I have given it a lot of thought, maybe because whilst writing this evaluation for the arts council I was writing about having identified what I need and want as an artist…. I want some time and space for my work, for my practice.

But it isn’t just about time and space, although this is a big part of it. It scares the shit out of me too….having more time and space.

I have been working full time for about three years now, and I do enjoy my job….i really enjoy it. But I know I need to make a change in my life. The longer I leave it, the more difficult it will be to get out of this comfort zone. I think I wrote about this in December or January… about taking time out and needing to do it, but there being something holding me back….

If I am working, then I always have this excuse to myself to ease that berating and guilt, that I don’t have enough time because I have to work to earn money. But now this opportunity has come up to apply for a studio, and it would also mean the opportunity to get myself out of the rut, to drop that excuse, to give myself time and space…and it is so exciting to think about this as a possibility for myself, but it does scare me….(probably even more reason to do it…) the fear of having that time and space and then being creatively constipated, of exposing myself as a fraud, (I know it sounds ridiculous)…it would be a big change in my life, which is exactly what makes it exciting and scary..

Anyway, to cut this a little shorter, (too late!), I am going to apply. I think I would be a fool not too, when my gut instincts are all yelling at me to apply. And as I was saying it isn’t just about needing this change, about needing time and space, it is about what you’ve said Jon…. The benefits of being around other creative people, and the support that offers.

It’s about being less isolated…which came up in my first one to one with Franko. It’s about making that step I have been talking about for about six months, of stepping outside of my comfort zone of using my current situation as an excuse, and being more independent…..(and it means I have also had to think about getting a car….it’s been three or four weeks since I last drove at all)…about taking myself seriously, trusting my gut instincts, believing in myself, in my practice, despite sometimes feeling like I don’t…

Rachel, I re-read your essay on Silence this weekend, (that you posted on the blog last October)…

Listening to yourself
To trust yourself utterly is a big responsibility, if you’re wrong you solely bear the weight of the consequences
Listen to yourself and don’t be hesitant or afraid to act

Isn’t change meant to be difficult?

Thank you for posting it on the blog. I don’t think I took it in in the same way as I do now…. I feel quite differently now in comparison to a year ago, six months ago even, and reading it again this weekend it reads differently for me…

I wonder whether I busy myself so I do not have to listen to myself….because it is easier to listen to other people…because it is easier not to bear the weight of the consequences, to sit on the fence, and give up my voice to the majority…or I am silent, hesitant…

So, before I go, it has been a good weekend. A weekend in which an different possibility has opened up in my head, and it feels very exciting.

Lucille, I hope you’re performance went well on Saturday, I was thinking of you… and I would really love to hear about it..how it went, and how you felt whilst doing it….must photograph these roller skates for you this week too.

With love Kat.

A.1) ACT ART 5 \'Till Death Us Do Art\' (CALL FOR ARTISTS)
On Friday 8th June 2007 the 5th annual London ACT ART event takes place in a 1000 capacity venue in London Bridge, London, U.K

ACT ART celebrates difference, supports cross-discipline ways of working and offers a safe environment to exhibit work in all disciplines. Currently we\'re still able to include more video work in the june 07 event. Both performance for the camera and documentation of live works are considered, with a particular emphasis on works that are experimental, radical, confrontational and non-mainstream.

ACT ART programmes work by a wide spectrum of artists who are united by an interest in the body and ranges from undergraduate students to established performance artists. We believe in bringing emerging artists together alongside more established practitioners in an attempt to create a dialogue between artists and their work, as well as staging an event that is open to everyone.

SARDINE CAN SCULPTURES
(franko suggested that I make a 1000, i will gladly receive old toy donations which will fit in the cans or other such containers)
one of my work in progress regarding make do and mend.

top - the old hag on the broomstick chased the clown through the snowstorm

middle - bunny flew through the air as the wheels fell off his tricycle

bottom - she looked lovingly at the jack in the box but he was adamant that he was not going to marry her

Hello Peeps,

I had a very interesting Monday as Franko visited Stevenage and my studio. Franko, well done for getting here, I know what it can be like when you first start driving. Thank you for your comments and my mind is still reeling as to what to do next...

Tricks, Sleight-of-Hand, Balloon Artistry...

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know that I am performing on Saturday as part of the Strictly Bona Ball, a benefit for Transfabulous! the transgender arts festival that will happen in the summer in London.

Here's the blurb:

‘Magical Entertainer: tricks, sleight-of-hand, balloon artistry’ adopts the format of roller skate clad cabaret performer of close-up magic. I can neither skate, perform magic, or do balloon modelling. My motivation in combining three pastimes in which I am a complete beginner is in order to occupy a space where I am bound to fail in terms of audience expectations.

It is key to this work that I will be performing to individual audience members/ small groups, because key to this space is the intimacy of such a dynamic, and the awkwardness/ embarrassment/ delight/ surprise at close quarters. By placing myself in a potentially vulnerable position, i.e. that of failing in front of my audience, I believe an interesting space of emotional exchange is opened up.

This work has been created as part of the ‘Strictly Bona Ball’, a fundraiser for the Transfabulous Transgender Arts Festival 2007 (www.transfabulous.co.uk). It will also be part of ‘Losing It: Mad Chicks Sans Frontières: A wild night of Art, Music, Performance & Film’, presented by Creative Routes, Mad Pride and Mad Chicks, and ‘Bird Club Extravaganza’ a live event presented as part of the London Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Film Festival, both in March.

Have been enjoying playing with my performing persona; she is well-meaning, enthusiastic, polite but essentially an amateur, and not very good at what she is doing.
As you may pick up in these photos, my make-up is erring on the side of 'show' but in a not very skilled way. Let's just say I will be aiming for a visible tan tide-mark along my jaw-line! It will be interesting to see how folks react. I'm expecting to experience some gender prejudice! Which is a strong part of why I am motivated to occupy a space of bumbling, and intentionally not trying to occupy a space of 'professional'. I think 'not very confident or competant' is an interesting space from which to sortie into the world, and watch folks prejudice about this unfold!
To prepare for this, I am not practicing skating, magic or balloons! Obviously, on the night, i will want to do well, so it essential that I don't prepare in advance, incase I become accomplished! Ofcourse, I expect to awake on Sat morning cursing my choice to occupy this 'conceptual' space!

feeling flat...

Hello everyone

I hope you’re all well, not caught this cold bug thing that seems to be going around here. I have managed to avoid it so far, so fingers crossed I will survive catching the lurgy until next winter now.

Have been giving some more thought to Birmingham on Sunday. I do really want to see everyone, but the train taking five hours to get me home is such a pain.
My parents are away this weekend too, which means I have the perfect opportunity to get on with some work without being interrupted….I know, I know, I haven’t seen anyone since December, but nor have I put much time aside to get on with my work.

More and more I realise how little time and space I give my work, and it’s crazy. It’s what makes me feel most alive, yet I am working full time and trying to fit it into my evenings alongside all those domestic bores. Jon, is it the Wysing Studios you were writing an application for? When I saw the advert in artists newsletter, at first I kind of brushed it aside – for a long time I have told myself I don’t need or want a studio. When I was at college I came to the conclusion that I ended up decorating the space rather than getting on with work in it, so I have never given that mush thought to having a studio since. But now I am thinking about it as a possibility, the more I think it would be a good idea to apply. And it isn’t just about having a space in which to work. I can work here, but it is where I live…so all those domestic things seem to invade it, and the bloody TV pulls me in far too often, far more than I want it to. So, I think I might apply for a studio….

On another note, I want to get on with some work at the weekend…or at least just play. Making work, and the possibilities for making work always feel so much more exciting and real when I’m thinking whilst doing. I want to do some stuff in my room here. The blinds in my room cover the windows, but the light seeps in around them, so there’s three panels illuminated from a faint light….it sounds dull, but there’s something really beautiful about it…the fact that the window is at the foot of my bed too, so I fall asleep looking at it and wake up to see it…..it’s probably best if I just post some images of it when and if I have some….
I wanted to ask actually about how I might go about taking photos or filming in poor light, ie quite dark…will they not just come out underexposed? I’ve taken photos in the dark before, and some of them have come out ok, but others look appalling. And whenever I have filmed in semi darkness the quality for the images is terrible too….maybe because my camera isn’t great. I know medium format cameras give a much better quality, (it’s on my wish list!), but is it the same with video? Does high definition make a big difference? If anyone can offer any expert technical advice I would be most grateful! I will work with what I have got at the weekend though and see what it throws up.

I have been feeling a bit flat, and I am sure this is in part because I feel so distanced from my work…the only way to get back into it though is to give myself some time and space to do so…..this seems to be my daily recurring reminder- you need time and space to nurture your artistic practice…yet I still cling onto the comfortable life as I currently know it…not making that leap of faith.

Shabz, have you cancelled your thin on 9 March at Toynbee Studios? I emailed Nikki Tominson about it yesterday, but have just read Franko’s reply to Madeleine…will you do it at a later date? I would love to know, as I would be interested in being there.

Madeleine…I keep forgetting to ask, how is the marathon training going? I have been running only a few times this year, but think of you each time I do. I hope it’s going well, and you’re enjoying it!

I won’t go on….will catch up with the other posts though..

With love, Kat.

Birmingham

Hello All

Who is driving up to Birmingham from London on Sunday? Is anyone? Or is anyone going by train?
I have intended to go on Sunday, but I have been looking at train times, and it's one of those occasions that I wish I had a car. I can get a train to Birmingham and back on Sunday, but will not be able to get there until 2pm and will have to leave by about six at the latest I think....which doesn't leave all that much time....and teh worst bit is tha five hour journey home- two hours to sit at cambridge train station...
If anyone is driving from London and has got a space in their car, can you let me know what time you would be leaving London on teh Sunday? I can't get into London on Sunday until just afetr midday, but could maybe come down late on Saturday night and stay with a friend.

Otherwise, I might just have to sit this one out....but will keep thinking about it...maybe I could go up and stay in Birmingham or manchester overnight just for teh opportunity to have a night away somewhere unfamiliar....hmm....but it would be better to travel up on Sunday- i am hoping to get on with some work at the weekend on saturday.

I hope everyone is well.

Katherine.

the rope

hello all i would be glad of any comments on the pieces i did below (january) entuitled "The rope" and a bit about the rope. do you think it would work. vdo you think writing about a performance and not doing it is a valid art form?

hello all- i am still alive!

hello- yes i am ok and still here. i have been really busy with work (earning money in a restaurant) i haven't even had time to check my email recently, let alone check the blog or even consider making any work! i need to make time for reading and posting on the blog, and make it part of my habit/routine.

habit/routine - seems to be my theme at the moment. i am really enjoying working really hard- feeling like i am earning myself out of a financial black hole. for the first time since i was at school, i seem to have some routine and rhythm to my days/weeks/months- and i love the feeling. i have also gone crazy for exercise so when i am not at work i am at the gym or swimming. I seem to have drifted away from my practice, or more like just become more comfortable to get on with other things for a bit. I am the happiest i have been in ages though- even though running the restaurant i work at is not necessarily what i would choose as a career, it is something for me to get my teeth into, and i can feel functional. Getting back into useing and pushing my body to the limit also really gets my endorfins going like crazy, so i am on a constent high at the moment (I feel like there maybe some interesting video/performance work in that somewhere- weight lifting - pushing your body so hard that it fails etc...).

although i havent been putting anything together into concidered pieces, i have actually been producing work, and have been collecting loads of images, and writing stuff in my books!- so i am looking forward to the day when i have enough time to sit down and look at them.

I am just typing nonsence now as i have been working or working out all day and it's very late. I have just realized though that i do actually have things to say and there is more i would like to share.... so more of that when i am not about to pass out.

DIY 4

all For Proposals DIY 4 - Professional development
projects BY artists FOR artists across the UK

Deadline for applications: 19 February 2007
Full Application Guidelines: www.thisisliveart.co.uk

DIY 4 is an opportunity for artists working in Live Art to conceive and run
professional development projects for other artists.

DIY 4 builds on the strengths of three earlier DIY schemes which have proved
to be invaluable and rewarding experiences for project leaders, participants
and organisers alike *.

For the first time DIY 4 is taking place across the UK and we are planning
to support at least sixteen projects in collaboration with partners. We
particularly want to hear from you if you have a proposal which will benefit
artists in London, the South East, the North West, the West Midlands,
Yorkshire, East England and East Midlands.

If you have an idea for an exciting, innovative and idiosyncratic Live Art
professional development project that offers something new and is geared to
the eclectic and often unusual needs of artists whose practices are grounded
in challenging and unconventional approaches, forms and concepts then DIY 4
is the scheme for you.

I believe 'DIY for artists' is a really productive form of training, as it
is so specifically tailored to what I need. I've been on many training
courses before but none that felt so relevant to me. To carry on the
tailoring analogy - it's the difference between a bespoke suit and an off
the peg outfit!! (Clare Thornton, DIY 1 participant)

I’ve learnt more in these three days than in the past six months (Casper
Below, DIY 2 participant)

The workshops have refreshed my outlook and contexts for making and
performing artwork (Jenny Edbrooke, DIY 3 participant)

• Your DIY 4 project must take place between May and August 2007.

• You do not have to live in London, the South East, the North West, the
West Midlands, Yorkshire, East England or East Midlands to apply, but your
project must take place in one of these regions and benefit artists from
that regions.

• We expect to award at least sixteen grants of £1,000 each to support
sixteen projects: five to benefit London based artists, at least two to
benefit artists based in each of the South East, the North West, the West
Midlands, Yorkshire or East England regions and one to benefit artists in
the East Midlands.

DIY 4 is a collaboration between the Live Art Development Agency, Artsadmin,
and New Work Network, and is being developed with Nuffield Theatre/LANWest
(North West), New Work Yorkshire (Yorkshire), Fierce Festival (West
Midlands), Colchester Arts Centre (East England), Brighton Fringe Arts
Production (The Basement) (South East), and Dance4 (East Midlands).

If you think you can initiate and run a professional development project for
other artists then please see the full DIY 4 guidelines on:
www.thisisliveart.co.uk

Email versions of the full guidelines can also be requested from:
diy@thisisLiveArt.co.uk

*Reports on the first two years of DIY and full details of each project can
be found on www.thisisLiveArt.co.uk

DIY 4 is part of Joining the Dots, a Live Art Development Agency
professional development initiative for artists across the UK. Joining the
Dots is supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the Calouste
Gulbenkian Foundation.

something encouraging...

some words of Dhammapada - Sayings of the Buddha, 'Yourself:'

Your work is to discover your work
And then with all your heart
To give yourself to it

- Am very busy with various deadlines so have not responded specifically to anyone - but look forward to catching up (at last!) on 25th in Brum..xxx and onwards....

Ladyboi Lucille; Magical Entertainer

Magic, Sleight-of-Hand, 'Balloon Artistry'

I will perform in London 24 Feb at the Transfabulous Strictly Bona Ball.

A fundraiser for the 2007 Transfabulous Transgender Arts Festival (www.transfabulous.co.uk), I will be as a wandering minstrel for the evening, performing close up magic and balloon modelling, with a bit of dancing and wobbling on my roller skates...

And, no, I do not know how to skate, perform magic, or model balloons...

I move (unsteadily) on skates, performing (not terribly proficiently) close up magic, and modelling (in an amateur and bungling fashion) balloons. I am a well-meaning, enthusiastic, blundering, and affable character, as I stumble, trip, drop things, pop balloons/ let them go shrieking overhead, and generally create minor mayhem.

This character draws on burlesque, but in a tongue in cheek manner, innocent, and subversive. It may appear accidental, but is in fact created and executed in a thoroughly calculated way. As ever in my practice, I am fascinated to explore the space of the amateur as a potent vehicle for emotional exchange between audience and performer.

Oh, and if anyone has any tips re skating, magic, balloons; all gratefully received....

xx

arrghhh

the PC baffles me. why is it that everything has to be around this damn machine. I feel like I have a growth attached to me - every where I go so goes the lap top or data card/CD. Here I sit pondering over my entry for applying for a new studio, getting stuff ready for the website. I end up swearing and cussing, either the connection has gone down or the link with the blog plays up...

all of this ended with my latest thoughts....

PS: A message for Tom, the image is interesting as it makes me engage with it to see what the objects are. I chuckle, try keeping a studio, house, relationship all in a state of organised bliss. just a suggestion but try working the actual view from the window in colour... it may not feel so dark then.

Fully licensed

hello

I hope everyone is well.

Well, having posted at teh beginning of January about the excitement at the thought of passing my driving test, I have finally done it!!!! I can't tell you how excited I am about it, and I keep havng to remind myself of it. Starting learning to drive coincided with strating on teh mentoring scheme, so those things that surfaced during my one to ones about being more independent and striving towards where i want to be seem to be tied up with passing my test and achieving my ticket to a sense of freedom.

It is a liberating experience. in September 2005 I remember sitting down and writing a list of things I wante dto do with my life. I rarely do this in such a definite manner. There were two things that I wrote down that I wanted to do, or at least i wante dto try to do, and these things signalled a departure from a particular period in my life. he first thing i wante dto do was run teh London marathon again. I had run the marathon in my first year of university in London- partly as a way of using up my time- I knew few people in London and the first year was a struggle in a number of ways. It was symbolic in that by teh end of that year I felt as if pathways were opening up and by achieving something I had set out to do, it gave me confidenece and belief in myself. I ran teh marathin again last year, ad the sense of purpose and achievement it gave me at teh time were really important. Learning to drive was always going to take that bit longer, but was equally, if not more, important. It was, and ism about independence for me. So, being told "you've passed" symbolises so much more than being able to get in a car.....it was about facilitating myself, my practice.

It's funny to sit here now and write this, to realise how much meaning I have come to attach to being able to drive....because it isn't, and never has been,. about atually being able to drive, and the ability and physical getting in a car, but about gaining that independence, opening up possibilities for myself and my work....and about confidence.

So, having thought I would just pass and feel good, maybe hire a car as and when i need to, now I am considering buying a car....shit, t feels immensely liberating and freeing and empowering....which is what i want, and i think what i need. Giving myself the confidence and power and opening up possibilities.....

ANTY FESTIVAL - CALL FOR PROPOSAL

------------------------------------
ANTI Festival - Call for Proposals
ANTI Festival will be organized in Kuopio in September 27–30, 2007. ANTI is a forum for experimental, radical and non-commercial art. It offers an international and visible arena to introduce art works in a city environment. The emphasis of the ANTI festival is on live art and environmental art, including light, sound, installation and performances. JOIN US!

Artists and students as well as designers from all artistic fields are encouraged to submit their new ideas and works of art.

CONTENTS OF ANTI PROPOSALS

This festival aims to activate sites/environments selected beforehand in the city of Kuopio. Art works can take place directly in the proposed location or conceptually in- or outdoors. The participating artists select the location for their works from the proposed location options. The list of sites can be viewed on our festival website.

It is essential for the proposals to take the audience and customers that are already present at each location into consideration. Site-specificity is an extremely important factor as regards assessing and selecting momentary performances as well as sculptural works. In addition to the physical location, the idea of the work can deal with the notion of space through people who work in that particular place or the values, actions or contemporary events which the location represents. Please note that the art works may also combine various locations and themes. In addition to the site-specific elements of each location, it is possible to use sound and lights in the environmentally-oriented art and performances.

FORM OF PROPOSALS AND REQUIREMENTS

The proposals must include the name of the artist and a CV, working title of the work, place, contact details, budget, technical requirements and a working plan (max. 1 page) and only one appendix (i.e. photograph, video, CD-ROM). Appendices will not be returned. The proposals do not need to be technically ready before submission as the idea can be developed afterwards. However, it is important that the main idea of the work and the estimated costs are clearly stated in the proposal. Estimated costs should include all the necessary materials, travelling costs and the artist fee. Photos and descriptions of the sites are available at www.antifestival.com.

The sites of the ANTI 2007 festival are Open College (Puistokartano), the reduction of the city paper Viikko-Savo, Uppo-Nalle children’s park, Grill Teatterigrilli, skateboarding spot, Vasikkasaari Island and Kuopion Osuuspankki Bank. Site-specific information will be available on our website.

The deadline for applications is 28 February, 2007. Please post your application to ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival, Koljonniemenkatu 2, 2nd Floor, 70100 Kuopio, Finland or e-mail info@antifestival.com. Please note that the appendix (if necessary) should be sent by post.

Big Brother - Racism issue

Hi all,
My work has touched on cultural differenciation and racism and I just wanted to spark some debate.
Was the behaviour of Jackiey, Jade, Danielle and Jo racism or "only" bullying?
There are quite a few different opinions out there. The main issue is that it made me question what actually makes someone a racist? Does it start with a thought, a comment or an action? For me racism is always based on ignorance and most importantly I think the expression "racism" is obsolete and needs to be reviewed. Racism is not about difference of skin colour anymore - has it ever been? The Nazi differenciation of Arian Race and the Jewish Race is certainly not based on skin colour. The expression "Race" is already in my opinion explosive in itself and I think doesn't necessarily exist in a scientific context - or does it?
In a software course we looked at the calculated codes (don't really remember how we did it) of pale skin and dark skin - and guess what - it is exactly the same code.
Anyway, anyone any thoughts on it?
Biggi

Rachel's Xmas Carol video

Hi Rachel,
I finally get the chance to leave a criticism in regards to your video.
It is quite a while ago, and I don't seem to get access to what the others said, but I wanted to leave some food for thought.
Somehow I got the feeling that the group went out for a cheap shot. I enjoyed the singing and the provocation but when it came to the encounter with the security personnel the whole system broke down. The message I got out of it was security is not permitted to touch a person and to touch a video camera. It would have been nice not to desert into, or better hide behind, the excuses of "hey, we are untouchable, don't lay your fingers on us or break anything because we could sew you" but to start a confrontation in regards to political issues, commercialism, sweatshops... "How can you work at a place like that, which supports... ? or in whatever form... or handing out some material... I don't know. I feel that you opened up a great opportunity that you didn't take advantage of...
Let me know what you think.
warm greetings

Making video work on blog

Hi Jon

You presented a challenge, so i thought I would try it out.

So in theory, post your video on You Tube, grab the link that is listed next to it, then cut and past it into your post.

Sounds easy, hopefully it will work!!

If anyone has a better method, share !

(google is trying out a video platform as they are slowly marching on and taking over the world...)

An installation entitled "21st century plagues"

hi there

the images are from an installation which was craeted last year. I wish the blog allowed video footage as the both come with sound and motion. the work is two pieces

"innocence" (above) is a laminated tissue paper red ribbon embedded with photocopies of childhood and rope, backed by rope lights bound in red plastic with a sound bite (triggered when pressed) of a music box playing happy birthday.

overall dimensions - 100x80x80cms (with plinth draped in bedsheet)

"one flu over" is a goose feather oval construction which is rotated by a motor combined with a slide projection (the next epidemic is near) and a sound bite of ring o ring of roses.

overall space for installation 4 square meters.

This installation was shown last march in the exhibtion betrayed by the senses, the bargehouse, oxo tower wharf southbank, london

the space we used for the exhibtion is fantastic, it would make an excellent venue for a group exhibtion. It's a derelict warehouse on the upper floors.

thought it was about time i put some of my bigger work on the blog, just wish I could get the video piece on here.

let me know what you think and google the bargehouse as an exhibtion venue

the odd things you find when google searching

Hi guys,

another insane sleepless night. endless internet reseach or crap tv.
I google searched mine and franko's name and clicked on one of the links that put us both together. this had nothing to do with either of us. From what I can work out, it is to do with martial arts and chinese medicines and therapies. After doing my usual flying scroll through the pages of the PDF file

I Stopped on the following quote...

Only by cultivating a receptive state of mind, without preconceived ideas or thoughts, can one master the secret art of reacting spontaneously and naturally without hesitation and without purposeless resistance.

Weird but feel it fits quite a lot that goes on with our lives and some of the discussions on the blog.

Hope you are all well

Hugs

Jon
